Last covering date: a Taiwan deadline set by the trading calendar
This page describes Taiwan's margin and short-sale system, and applies only to TWSE- and TPEx-listed stocks. When a company holds a shareholder meeting, goes ex-dividend, or raises capital, the exchange announces a short-sale suspension window. Where mandatory covering applies, open short positions must be covered by the announced deadline, and that deadline is public.
Taiwan market only
Mandatory covering comes out of Taiwan's margin-trading system and its shareholder-record practices: the suspension window is triggered by a corporate calendar event—a shareholder meeting, an ex-dividend date, a capital raise—and announced by the exchange. Short selling in other markets has no equivalent market-wide, pre-announced covering deadline tied to record-date events; a borrower is usually recalled by an individual broker, at a time that is neither public nor knowable in advance. The derivation and tracking described here therefore do not carry over to markets outside Taiwan.
From suspension notice to deadline
In the usual case, the last covering date is the trading day before the suspension starts. Insightr derives it by walking back one Taiwan trading day from the announced start date, skipping holidays and non-trading days, so it is not simply the previous calendar day. Around Lunar New Year, an emergency closure, or any exception the exchange announces separately, the exchange's published date governs.
Why the date is worth watching
As the deadline approaches, forced buy-backs can cluster and lift the price short term. The actual size of the covering, borrow availability, and the ownership structure are not disclosed, so a squeeze is one possible outcome, not a given. Treat it as a research lead, not advice.
Following it in Insightr
The Taiwan market page lists covering deadlines soonest first, with the days remaining. When a symbol has a notice whose deadline has not passed, its stock page shows the last covering date and the suspension window directly. An entry drops off entirely once its deadline passes, so no expired reminder lingers.
